Dreaming of Fishes

$35.00

“Dreaming of Fishes” Atsei Cooper 12/31/2023

In the Kituwah culture, dreaming of fishes are good omens of fertility, of welcoming new life. The newborn in the moon is encircled in an ancestral scroll pattern, surrounded by dancing brook trout. This piece evokes a calm, loving, and dreamy emotion, with soothing, cool colors and notes of warmth. I created this piece as a meditation on motherhood and the transitions that come with it. To bring a child into this world is to be brave and to have hope. It is to have your heart living outside of your body. May we never lose that.

My heart is with the mothers who are in unsafe situations, who are dreaming of a world where their babies can grow old and have healthy lives of abundance. My heart is with the mothers of Palestine, of Sudan, of Congo. My heart is with migrant mothers. With those who struggle in poverty, those who have survived climate catastrophe, fascism or war. With those who are finding ways for their families to survive against all odds.

May our world become a kinder place, where the wellbeing and safety of life and the planet always come first
